Hot Stone Reflexology

The Therapy

The stones are warmed and are applied to various reference points and they help to clear the energy zones within the feet. This helps to bring about healing quicker and in a more profound way. They promote deep relaxation.

The stones themselves have healing qualities - they are made of Basalt, a type of rock that is rich in Iron, so they retain heat better than other stones. They are also river stones which due to river current has made them very smooth.

Benefits of Hot Stones

There are physiological and psychological benefits of using hot stones:

  • Circulatory system - improved circulation due to the vasodilatation of the capillaries.
  • Lymphatic system - increased action of Leukocytes and Lymphatic function, and can help reduce oedema (particularly as the lower legs are massaged with the stones).
  • Muscular system - hot stones help ease tension in muscles and allow them to relax. This helps them recover from overuse or tension, and repair can occur more efficiently.
  • Nervous system - stimulates the Parasympathetic nervous system (reducing heart rate, encouraging slower/deeper breathing, relaxing inner organs) to bring about Homeostasis, which is particularly useful for clients prone to stress, anxiety or depression.
  • Digestive system - helps to restore balance and, through stimulation of the Parasympathetic nervous system, the digestive system works more efficiently.
  • Endocrine system - holding the stones on endocrine points can help to re-balance the endocrine glands, which helps to balance the release of particular hormones in the body.
  • Psychological - the therapy triggers a sense of wellbeing, release of tension and anxiety, the comfort and warmth of the stones provide a sense of safety and security, and the effect of having personal relaxing therapy makes you feel valued and nurtured.
